4 Assi di Forza Project

The 4 Assi di Forza project is a large-scale mobility initiative worth €471 million, of which €350 million is funded by the PNRR. It aims to revolutionize the Public Transport System in Genoa through major electric infrastructure developments for a new fleet of 18-meter electric AMT vehicles.

Key interventions include the complete renovation of the two AMT depots in Val Bisagno (Gavette and Staglieno) and the creation of an interchange parking area. The replacement of 139 diesel AMT vehicles with new 18-meter electric buses completes the transformation.

Project Progress

The project has successfully completed both the definitive and executive design phases and is now in the construction phase, with works underway across the city.

Lot 1 – Gavette and Staglieno (€66M) – Awarded to Arco Gemmo Cosedil

  • Gavette: Excavation and micropiling work is in progress. The depot will be covered with sports fields and green areas, improving the surroundings of nearby schools and buildings.
  • Staglieno: The project has been revised following community requests, reducing parking levels from three to two floors. Construction will begin once Gavette is completed to ensure AMT's maintenance operations remain uninterrupted.

Lot 2 – Infrastructure and Routes (€200M) – Awarded to RTI ICM-Leonardo-Colas Rail

This is the core of the project, encompassing:

  • Trolleybus and electrical infrastructure
  • 17 electric substations to power the new electric buses
  • Modern and accessible bus shelters
  • Traffic signal prioritization for buses
  • Dedicated lanes (covering almost 70% of routes) to ensure reliable service and travel times

The executive project has been validated and approved. Work is in progress, focusing on bus stops, shelter installations, and electrical substations, particularly in Val Bisagno. This corridor, from Molassana Prato to Piazzale Kennedy, will feature flash charging stations at terminals and stops instead of overhead wires.

Current work includes:

  • Prato terminal construction
  • Brignole, Staglieno, and Ponte Fleming substations
  • Around 30 new bus stops
  • 30% completion rate, adhering to PNRR deadlines

Other Routes and Expansion

  • Centro Axis (Piazza Galileo Ferraris to Campi): Revamping of existing infrastructure
  • Levante Axis (Corso Europa): Installation of new poles underway
  • Ponente Axis (ending in Voltri): Key electrical substations under construction

For these three corridors, which use In Motion Charging (a mix of trolley wires and battery-powered sections), solutions are being evaluated to reduce underground interventions and minimize the 600 planned overhead poles.

Logistics Areas

To free space at Gavette, several logistics areas have been successfully developed:

  • Campi (operational with 60 AMT vehicles by 2024)
  • Resasco Sud (completed)
  • Marassi Piastra (under construction)

Additionally, AMT has acquired the ex-Guglielmetti workshops (November 2024). Redevelopment work will begin in Q1 2025 and conclude by March 2026, creating an 18,000 sqm facility with AMT offices and workshops.

AMT Vehicles – €125M Investment

A key part of the project is the renewal of AMT’s fleet, replacing diesel buses with electric models, contributing to Genoa’s green transition.

  • 112 new 18-meter Solaris electric trolleybuses
  • 27 new 18-meter flash-charging buses for Val Bisagno

Deliveries are ongoing throughout 2025, followed by testing and commissioning.
