From Genova Airport to Erzelli

Moving Walkway

To enhance connections between Cristoforo Colombo Airport and the Erzelli technology hub, Genova is investing in modern and sustainable infrastructure.

Two key projects, the Moving Walkway and the Erzelli Funicular, will ensure faster and more efficient access, promoting intermodal mobility and making the area more accessible for travelers, students, and workers.

MOVING WALKWAY

The Moving Walkway will serve as the link between Genoa C. Colombo Airport and the new FS Airport/Erzelli Station (currently under construction). This project is part of GATE – Genoa Airport Train to Europe and is included in the Airport Development Plan, which aims to reorganize the surrounding areas to improve efficiency and accessibility, increasing its attractiveness for both passenger and cargo transport compared to competing airports.

The Moving Walkway is a fully elevated pedestrian bridge equipped with moving walkways, spanning approximately 640 meters at a height of about 6 meters above ground. It features a moving walkway and a pedestrian lane in each direction. The pathway is covered with a photovoltaic energy generation system and remains accessible even in the event of walkway malfunctions. Additionally, it includes multiple intermediate access and exit points, with safety exits placed every 50 meters.

ERZELLI FUNICULAR

The Erzelli Funicular project aims to create a cable railway system connecting the FS Airport/Erzelli Station (under construction) with the Erzelli hill, where a new technology and university hub is being developed, alongside a planned residential area with a park and a new hospital complex for the western part of the city. The total estimated investment for this project is approximately €100 million.

The funicular system will be a "shuttle-type" ground funicular, operating on a single-track layout except for a double-track section at the midpoint, where the two cars will pass each other. The first part of the route will be fully elevated on a viaduct, while the second section, from the passing loop to the upper station, will transition briefly into a trench before entering an artificial tunnel.

The lower station, housing the mechanical components, will be directly accessible via a pedestrian bridge from the future railway station. The upper station will be underground, centrally located within the Erzelli Science and Technology Park, effectively serving all facilities within the development.

This is a green transport system, fully powered by electric motors, with a high passenger capacity of approximately 4,500 people per hour. The journey will be extremely fast, covering a distance of about 1 kilometer with a 96-meter elevation difference, in less than 3 minutes.
