Talent, research and innovation: Genova reaffirms its position as a world leader in unmanned aerial systems

Dope Hubs’ fourth-place result at the IMechE UAS Challenge highlights the value of a model that combines higher education, research and the development of local talent: the Genova-based deep-tech start-up ranked among the leading teams in one of the most prestigious university competitions dedicated to unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Founded in 2023, Dope Hubs aims to support young talents from Liguria by creating opportunities for growth that allow them to fully develop their potential without having to seek opportunities elsewhere; with the support of the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, it now comprises more than 150 young researchers.

Every year, the UAS Challenge, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, brings together students from several universities around the world with the aim of designing, building and testing an autonomous aircraft capable of simulating a humanitarian mission: following a predefined route even in adverse conditions, accurately transporting and dropping a water payload onto designated targets on the ground, and then returning to base.

The Genova-based team, which competed with the “Panissa” drone – developed at the University of Genoa – achieved the best result among the Italian projects, finishing behind the teams from the universities of Bath, Beihang and Dublin. This result improves on the 2025 edition, which saw them finish sixth out of 42 participating teams and receive the Advancement Award, a prize awarded to the team that made the most significant technical progress during the competition.

This achievement reflects the effectiveness of a model based on education, research and experimentation, capable of supporting young talent and preparing students to address technological challenges of international significance.
