From Genova to New York: new opportunities for investment, tourism and international relations at the heart of the mission to the US
The City of Genova’s official mission to New York has ended with great success; it was an important opportunity to strengthen the historical, cultural and economic ties between the two cities and to promote the Ligurian capital as an increasingly attractive destination for investments, tourism and new development opportunities.
The mission began on Monday 6 July with the Genoese delegation’s visit to the Ellis Island Museum, a symbol of Italian emigration to the United States and a repository of the memory of thousands of Ligurians who have contributed to the history of New York, forging a natural link with the National Museum of Italian Emigration (MEI), which is based in Genova. On the same day, Mayor of Genova Silvia Salis met with representatives of the 'Associazione Liguri nel Mondo', the New York chapter of the Ambassadors of Genova in the World and numerous Italian-American cultural and sporting organisations active in the area. During the meetings, the role of sport as a strategic lever for international diplomacy and inclusion was emphasised.
The day continued aboard the Amerigo Vespucci, on the occasion of its arrival on the River Hudson, with an exclusive and well-attended event dedicated to presenting Genova to tour operators and the specialist press, where the Mayor invited those present to view the Ligurian capital as a major investment opportunity, as well as a great city with an international and tourist-oriented profile.
The city of Genova is open to new opportunities and has everything it needs to attract investment, as well as young people who want to come here to live, study or work. Genova’s aim is to be an attractive destination, but also an inclusive and accessible one. During the event, the city’s prestigious awards and the positive results achieved by the tourism sector were also highlighted; the sector continues to show steady growth, confirming Genova’s ability to attract an ever-wider and more international audience.
On 7 July, the mission continued with a series of economic and cultural networking meetings involving Italian entrepreneurs operating in the United States. The round-table discussions provided an important opportunity to explore opportunities for collaboration and investment between Genoa and the US market, highlighting the city’s role as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean.
This was followed by a visit to some of New York’s most iconic buildings designed by the Genoese architect and life senator Renzo Piano, a witness to Genova’s excellence on the world stage and the city’s ability to demonstrate expertise, innovation and international vision.
The Genoese delegation was also received at New York City Hall, where a stimulating discussion took place involving an exchange of best practices; during this, New York City expressed particular interest in the ‘15-minute city’ vision and the Sport Senior project.
The mission concluded with an official visit to the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute, with which the foundations were laid for future fruitful collaborations between the cities of Genova and New York. The final stop was the headquarters of the Columbus Citizens Foundation.
The mission reaffirms Genova’s commitment to strengthening its presence on international markets, developing long-term institutional and economic relationships, and promoting the region as an ideal destination for investment, business and the creation of new growth opportunities.
