A DERBY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: GENOA AND SAMPDORIA TOGETHER FOR SUSTAINABILITY

12/03/2026

In Genoa, football takes the field for the environment. On March 10, the project “Separate waste collection is a team game. A derby for the city” has been presented at Palazzo Tursi, promoted by Corepla, the Municipality of Genoa and AMIU Genova with the participation of Genoa CFC and UC Sampdoria.

Genoa CFC and UC Sampdoria are the first teams of the most important italian championships, to take part in an initiative of this kind, becoming pioneers of a project that Corepla aims to develop further in order to raise awareness and involve more and more fans in separate waste collection and PET bottle recycling. For the occasion, official t-shirts made of 100% recycled PET have been produced for the two Genoese clubs. Fans will be able to get them through the Recopet app once they reach the threshold of 2,500 points, obtained by depositing 2,500 PET bottles in the eco-compactors located across the city.

If the target will be achieved, the initiative will allow the collection of about 1.5 million plastic bottles, generating an important environmental benefit. Among the supporters of the project there are also some players from the two teams, such as Genoa captain Johan Vásquez and Sampdoria vice-captain Oliver Abildgaard, ambassadors of the message that sustainability, just like sport, is truly a team effort.

The initiative is part of a broader program promoted by the Municipality, AMIU and Corepla to improve both the quantity and quality of separate waste collection in Genoa, also in view of European targets for PET bottle recycling. As stated by the Mayor of Genoa and the Councillor for Environment and Waste Management, initiatives such as “A derby for the city” help reach a very wide audience and remind everyone that, when it comes to protecting the environment, the whole city can move in the same direction.
