Fishing for litter

GENOVA'S INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM GROWS THANKS TO EXCELLENCE IN SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES AND THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

18/04/2025

The Genova-based start-up Ogyre, winner of the IREN prize at the second edition of the Genova Global Goals Award - the main sustainability event in Genova, aims to promote its commitment to environmental protection and Genova's important innovation ecosystem as a hub of excellence in sustainable technologies and the circular economy. In this sense, Ogyre has received an important recognition, being among the three most voted start-ups of the “50 in a Day” event organised by the OGR Torino , with Microsoft Italia and Italian Tech Alliance, aimed at connecting innovation, investment and sustainability.

Ogyre is the first digital “Fishing For Litter” platform, providing for the cleaning of the ocean every day thanks to the active participation of its community of fishermen. This demonstrates how technological innovation can integrate with the circular economy to address global environmental problems while creating economic opportunities for local communities.

Ogyre involves people and companies in its mission. The former can choose to support the fishermen through a direct contribution or by purchasing products, which equate to a certain amount of kg of marine litter, such as swimming costumes, made of a fabric derived in part from regenerated waste, and others designed to reduce everyone's environmental impact, such as water bottles. Companies, on the other hand, carry out sustainability projects with Ogyre that have marine litter collection at their core.

Ogyre is active in the following five ports: Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Benoa (Bali, Indonesia), Santa Margherita Ligure (Liguria, Italy), Cesenatico (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) and Teulada (Sardinia, Italy).

The impact of “Fishing for Litter” is significant especially in Indonesia and Brazil, where waste is present in greater quantities and the contribution paid to fishermen becomes capable of positively affecting their income.

With Ogyre, Genova confirms itself as a beacon of innovation and sustainability, driving change towards a cleaner and more responsible future.
