Rebirth of the Hennebique: Demolition of the Marine Superstructures Completed.
The demolition operations of the marine superstructures of the Hennebique silo have been successfully completed, revealing the original facade of the building and marking the first step towards its rebirth. This intervention has brought to light the historic architecture of the Hennebique, freeing it from the structures added after 1945, which lacked historical and landscape value.
Started in November 2023, the operations required the use of advanced technologies to ensure safety and protect the marine environment. Thanks to careful material management, the 3,000 cubic meters of debris and 150 tons of iron removed were fully recovered and reused, in line with the principles of sustainability and circular economy.
The demolitions were particularly complex due to their location overhanging the sea, requiring the use of specific measures and equipment to handle the debris and prevent dispersion into the sea. A floating platform was set up to contain the rubble and prevent contamination of the marine environment.
This intervention represents the first step of the Hennebique redevelopment project, part of the broader regeneration plan of the historic Darsena. This plan aims to create a connection point between the cruise terminal of the Maritime Station, the Porto Antico, and the future Parco della Lanterna.
In the coming months, demolitions on the north side of the building will begin, while the roof remediation operations continue. The redevelopment project continues for the approximately 45,000 square meters of the building, divided into five floors plus the roof and the basements. In the future, the Hennebique will host offices of Fincantieri and Autostrade, with a significant portion of space dedicated to a new cruise terminal.
This path will lead to the transformation of the Hennebique into a new space integrated with the city and the port, contributing to the enhancement of Genoa's historical and architectural heritage.
