The city of Genova has participated in the second annual Forum of the EU Mission“Restore our Ocean and Waters”, contributing to shaping strategies to engage all stakeholders and marking a turning point in the protection of the blue heritage. The event, which concluded yesterday in Brussels, transformed the European capital into the epicenter of the marine environmental debate. It brought together experts and institutions to analyze achievements and outline a strategic roadmap for the next phase, transitioning from experimentation to the concrete implementation of solutions to safeguard European aquatic ecosystems.

From March 3 to 7, Brussels is also hosting the “European Ocean Days 2025”, featuring sessions on key maritime topics such as sustainable blue economy and blue investments. This event provides a platform for the exchange of ideas and innovative solutions, in which Genova is actively participating by contributing to the finalization of the European Ocean Pact and engaging with other stakeholders. Genova is the first major Italian city to sign the EU Mission Charter and has launched the Mayor Coalition, with a Transformation Agenda inspired by the Action plan Genova 2050. The Covenant of Mayors - Europe, an important coalition of mayors, now includes over 200 representatives from the Mediterranean region.

Genoa has also had the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to environmentally responsible economic development. In the scientific sector of the Blue Economy, the city has been recognized as a best practice in sustainability, particularly for its involvement in The Ocean Race. A group of experts from Genova contributed to a proposal for a future United Nations declaration on ocean rights.

Finally, Genova is participating in the Blueinvest Days, held from March 5 to 6 in Brussels, an event promoted by the European Commission to support innovation and investment in the Blue Economy. This initiative aims to foster sustainable growth through funding opportunities, networking, and business collaborations. In this setting, Genova has the opportunity to showcase its vision and role as a dynamic and competitive hub, attracting investments thanks to its commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Genoa also stands out in the shipping industry with the International Boat Show, where sustainable technologies are applied to new vessels, materials, and projects.

From the perspective of marine biodiversity protection, enhancement, and promotion, Genova plays a key role as the heart of the Pelagos Sanctuary and an innovation hub attracting investments. Recognized by the European Investment Bank EIB as a Blue Champion, Genova was the only city awarded for its holistic and climate-resilient vision for 2030, with an Action Plan extending to 2050. This recognition places Genova among the emerging cities shaping the future with concrete, high-value technical and reputational initiatives.
